The keel was laid on 4 July 2002, with approximately 3,000 craftsmen spending around eight million working hours on the ship. She floated out on 21 March 2003 and conducted sea trials in September and November 2003. Construction was completed on 22 December 2003; a fatal accident on 15 November 2003 during a shipyard visitor event killed 16 people after a gangway collapsed. QM2 departed Saint-Nazaire on 22 December 2003 and arrived in Southampton on 26 December 2003 for her official naming on 8 January 2004. Her maiden voyage commenced on 12 January 2004.
