Lanzarote, Spain cruise port guide
Lanzarote - also called the island of eternal spring - is one of the seven main islands of the Canary Islands, along with Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. The island is located in the northeast of the archipelago, only 140 km from Morocco. Here the power of nature meets the energy of the art of César Manrique. Nobody has shaped Lanzarote with his works like the architect and artist from Arrecife. The island's capital is not a classic beauty, but those looking for the Canary Islands and Spain's way of life will quickly find it here. From Arrecife you can easily explore the Canary Island of Lanzarote: All destinations and beaches can be reached with the shuttle bus in a short time. Discover the fascinating lava landscape of the Fire Mountains, the wonderful Papagayo beaches or drive to the Mirador del Rio, a lookout point designed by Cesare Manrique at an altitude of 475 m. From there you can admire the rugged beauty of the Canary Island, which has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993.
About Lanzarote, Spain
Lanzarote is the easternmost of Spain's Canary Islands, lying roughly 125–130 km off the northwest coast of Africa and renowned for its dramatic volcanic landscape and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status granted in 1993. The island capital, Arrecife, sits on the eastern coastline and serves as the arrival hub, with both airport and seaport. Often called the 'Island of Eternal Spring,' Lanzarote enjoys a mild subtropical climate and a distinctive cultural identity shaped by the volcanic eruptions of 1730–1736 and the legacy of local artist César Manrique.
The centrepiece excursion destination is Timanfaya National Park, whose brooding lava plains and cinder cones were produced by a catastrophic eruption sequence between 1730 and 1736 that buried a quarter of the island's most fertile land. Visitors are transferred by coach at the still-active Islote de Hilario to tour the Montañas del Fuego. The island bears an unusually coherent artistic legacy: local artist and conservationist César Manrique (1919–1992) designed the Jardín de Cactus, oversaw the Fundación César Manrique, and created the Monument to the Peasant — a gigantic sculpture at San Bartolomé's central crossroads accompanied by a museum of local culture. In Arrecife itself, the Castillo de San José houses an art museum, while a separate island fortress contains a history museum. Near the island's northern tip, the Mirador del Río commands panoramic views across the strait, and the Cueva de los Verdes lava tube connects to the Tunnel of Atlantis — identified by Wikipedia as the largest underwater volcanic tunnel in the world. The former capital of Teguise, with its cobbled streets and traditional architecture, draws visitors each Sunday for its well-known market.
