Transatlantic cruises cross between Europe and the Americas, and they come as two distinct products. Cunard sails a scheduled liner route between Southampton and New York year-round on a purpose-built hull; nearly everyone else crosses twice a year, repositioning between the Caribbean and the Mediterranean each spring and fall at notably low per-night fares. Direction and date shape the choice more than weather does: eastbound spring crossings catch the calmer water, westbound autumn ones the lower fares. Either way the trip is mostly open ocean. Long runs of sea days, and a clock change most nights.

Best time to cruise Transatlantic

Cross in November — the westbound window at 66% below March, with the storm peak behind you.

A transatlantic isn’t a weather destination. It’s a moving season. Ships cross east in April and May to spend summer in Europe, then come back west in October and November, and because a positioning run has to happen anyway, crossings carry some of the lowest per-night fares on the ocean. Across 214 upcoming sailings, the westbound window settles at $152 a night in November. That is 66% below March, and October’s $142 floor sits lower still, priced for the tail of the North Atlantic storm season. The trade-offs are the product: five to seven straight sea days, a clock change most nights, and an ocean that gets moodier as autumn deepens.

Daylight & sun

Hours per day

Southampton is the proxy here, and a crossing slides across latitudes anyway. What matters is the window. An April–May eastbound runs on 13–15 hours of usable light; an October–November westbound is down near 9–10. The clocks move most nights mid-ocean. Westbound hands you an hour back and gives you the 25-hour day. Eastbound takes one away.

The honest answers

The worst month

There’s no closed season on the Atlantic, but there is a wrong stretch: late August through October, when remnants of Atlantic hurricanes recurve into the crossing lanes and the autumn gale season builds. That’s exactly where the calendar’s floor sits. October runs $142 a night, and the discount is the ocean being priced honestly, not a loophole. Mid-winter crossings face the roughest average seas of the year; the ships are built for it, but pack sea legs.

Whales and dolphins mid-ocean

The honest answer: the open Atlantic is quiet water. Sightings cluster over the continental shelves at either end. Dolphins ride the bow out of port, and a fin whale sometimes shows off the Grand Banks or the Western Approaches. The deep mid-ocean days belong to seabirds and the horizon. Treat any whale as a lucky-day bonus, not a plan.

Transatlantic cruise timing — questions answered

What month is best for a transatlantic cruise?

November, if value decides it. The median is $152 per person per night across 42 westbound sailings, 66% below March, and it lands after the statistical peak of the remnant-storm season. If you’d rather cross the calmest water, take the eastbound window instead: April and May pair settling seas with lengthening days.

What time of year is the Atlantic Ocean the roughest?

Winter brings the North Atlantic’s biggest average seas, December through February, and late August through October adds swell from hurricanes recurving off the US coast. The calmest crossings cluster in late spring. That’s the shape of our hazard window: August–October is excluded from the verdict, and the low fares there are the market pricing the risk in.

What weather to expect on a transatlantic cruise?

It changes daily by design. A westbound run leaves north-west Europe cool, with Southampton highs around 60°F in October and 53°F in November, then arrives to Caribbean warmth; eastbound plays it in reverse. Mid-ocean, expect wind, spray, and deck days that come and go. Pack for both ends, plus a windproof layer for the middle.

What months to avoid cruising?

For a crossing, late August through October if you need certainty. That’s remnant-hurricane and autumn-gale territory, and while ships route around weather, itineraries flex. October’s $142-a-night median, the lowest on the calendar, is what that risk trades for. Mid-summer is the opposite problem: the fleets are already where they’re going, so there’s little to book.

How long does a transatlantic cruise take to cross the Atlantic?

A dedicated liner crossing runs about 7 nights. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 makes Southampton–New York in 6–8 sea days. Repositioning itineraries stretch to 12–17 nights by adding the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries, or Bermuda, which is exactly why per-night fares get so low: the heart of the trip is five to seven consecutive days at sea.

Is it worth going on a transatlantic cruise?

If sea days are your idea of a holiday, it’s the best per-night value on the ocean. November’s $152 median is 66% below March, and a 7-night stretch at that rate works out near $1,061 per person. The honest costs: a week with no ports, nightly clock changes, a one-way flight home, and an ocean that doesn’t always cooperate.

Which cruise line is best for transatlantic?

14 lines have crossings on sale right now, but they split into two products. Cunard's Queen Mary 2 is the only purpose-built ocean liner running scheduled crossings through the year, with a stabler hull and a fixed timetable. Royal Caribbean, Viking, and nearly everyone else cross twice a year as repositioning, and that's where the lowest per-night fares live. Different products, not a ranking.

What side of ship is best for a transatlantic cruise?

Face south for sun: starboard sailing eastbound, port sailing westbound. But on an open crossing there’s no coastline to chase, so a mid-ships cabin on a lower deck buys you more than either side. It’s the part of the ship that moves least when the Atlantic gets lively.
