Winter brings the North Atlantic’s biggest average seas, December through February, and late August through October adds swell from hurricanes recurving off the US coast. The calmest crossings cluster in late spring. That’s the shape of our hazard window: August–October is excluded from the verdict, and the low fares there are the market pricing the risk in.

It changes daily by design. A westbound run leaves north-west Europe cool, with Southampton highs around 60°F in October and 53°F in November, then arrives to Caribbean warmth; eastbound plays it in reverse. Mid-ocean, expect wind, spray, and deck days that come and go. Pack for both ends, plus a windproof layer for the middle.

For a crossing, late August through October if you need certainty. That’s remnant-hurricane and autumn-gale territory, and while ships route around weather, itineraries flex. October’s $142-a-night median, the lowest on the calendar, is what that risk trades for. Mid-summer is the opposite problem: the fleets are already where they’re going, so there’s little to book.

A dedicated liner crossing runs about 7 nights. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 makes Southampton–New York in 6–8 sea days. Repositioning itineraries stretch to 12–17 nights by adding the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries, or Bermuda, which is exactly why per-night fares get so low: the heart of the trip is five to seven consecutive days at sea.

If sea days are your idea of a holiday, it’s the best per-night value on the ocean. November’s $152 median is 66% below March, and a 7-night stretch at that rate works out near $1,061 per person. The honest costs: a week with no ports, nightly clock changes, a one-way flight home, and an ocean that doesn’t always cooperate.

Face south for sun: starboard sailing eastbound, port sailing westbound. But on an open crossing there’s no coastline to chase, so a mid-ships cabin on a lower deck buys you more than either side. It’s the part of the ship that moves least when the Atlantic gets lively.
