Norwegian Fjords cruises

May, for the classic reasons: waterfalls at their snowmelt peak, Bergen's driest month of the year (4.3"), and 17-hour days, all at fares below the summer peak. June and July add the midnight sun and the warmest afternoons at the highest prices. September is the value pick: $469 a night, 7% below July, with the fjords still green.

December, at 11.4". That is measured at Bergen, our reference station and one of Europe's wettest cities, with October through January each topping 10". Within the May–September scenery season, September is the wettest at 9.8" and May the driest at 4.3". Bergen sits on the wet outer coast; inland and northern Norway run notably drier.

For the fjords themselves, honestly, yes. Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO-listed for what you see from the water, and no road delivers that angle. What a ship can't give you is time: mountain hikes and the Flåm railway get hours, not days. Cruise for the coast; come back overland if the high country grabs you.

More than in most regions. The fjords are a scenery product, and the best sail-ins often happen from early morning, when your balcony beats a crowded rail. Expect to use it in a jacket, and rain is part of the deal, so covered balconies earn their keep. They run about $356 a night in July versus $465 in December.

Not in summer. From May to late July the sky above the Arctic Circle never gets dark. The season opens as September darkens and runs to late March, strongest through the long nights of November–February. Winter coastal voyages north of Tromsø are built around it; a September sailing can catch the first displays as a bonus.

December, at $360 per person per night across 181 sailings, 29% below July. The catch: that's deep in northern-lights season, when the inventory is winter coastal voyages, not scenery cruising. For fjord scenery at the lowest fare, pick September. It runs $469, 7% under July.

October through February, if scenery is the point. Bergen's wettest stretch (10–11" a month), daylight down toward five or six hours, and the year's roughest seas. Those months are excluded from our verdict. They're not wrong months so much as a different product: northern-lights coastal voyages, judged by dark skies rather than green water.

At current median 'from' fares, a 7-night sailing runs roughly $3,280 in September and about $3,534 in July. For a balcony, figure $3,256 to $2,492. Taxes and fees vary by line, and fly-cruise packages price differently.
