Porto Seguro, Brazil

Porto Seguro – loosely translated as safe bay – is known as “Brazil’s birth certificate”. The port was the first place that Alavares Cabralone and his crew set foot on while on their way their way to India in 1500. This makes the town the oldest in the country at 500 years. With three churches and around 40 buildings (both private residential houses and public institutions), restored by the state government for the 500th anniversary celebration of Brazilian discovery, Porto Seguro wears its age well. View less The whole historic centre has been a National Heritage site since 1973 by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) as well as an example of UNESCO Natural Heritage of Humanity since 2000. Although the main area of the lower town is small, the colourful houses that line the streets are definitely worth a visit. The main road is called “Passerela do Alcool” or alcohol alley, and was the route from the Cidade Alta - old town - that smugglers used to take the alcohol down to be shipped. Nowadays, it’s where it’s drunk rather than exported. The port is located on sunny Bahia’s Discovery Coast, 730 km south of Salvador and 1,120 km north of Rio. Nature espouses the coast, sand dunes, warm, clean waters, and palm trees which might well be enough for many travellers. Those who do enjoy the beach might want to make the 5-minute ferry crossing (or try the 1.5 hour walk) to Araial D’Ajuda, and turn on, tune in and drop out in the ex-hippie haven of the 1970s.

The Fort San Andre is a link back through time to Romblon Island’s Spanish colonial heritage. Built by the Spaniards in the 17th century, climb its set of steep stairs to enjoy views over this heavenly island realm. Wait until later if you want to catch a violent sunset bursting across the skies from its chunky stone walls.

Smoking Hills, Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories’ Smoking Hills show a natural phenomenon which has probably been active for thousands of years. The hills close to the Beaufort Sea were seen by John Franklin in 1826 during his second Canadian expedition looking for indications of a Northwest Passage. Franklin observed that the rocks and soil around Cape Bathurst seemed to be on fire and produced acrid white smoke. They were therefor named “Smoking Hills”. View less The reason behind this phenomenon is neither human-induced burning nor volcanic activity, but the subsurface exothermic reaction between the bituminous shale, the sulfur and the iron pyrite of the area. The heat being released through the oxidation of pyrites in the Cretaceous mudstones along the sea cliffs leads not only to high ground temperatures, but also to hot sulfurous gas being driven off and the possibility of spontaneous combustion. The fumes that are seen contain sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid and are noxious.

Somosomo, Taveuni
Somosomo is the largest village on Taveuni, which in turn is Fiji’s third largest island. The village has had and still has political importance as it is the headquarters for Taveuni’s highest chief, the Tui Cakau, and Fiji’s Great Council of Chiefs met in Somosomo until 2012. Somosomo and Naqara, its immediate neighboring village with a predominantly Indo-Fijian population, are the commercial center for Taveuni. View less Slightly west of Somosomo is the 180th meridian and a sign indicating the International Dateline (which has been moved east of Tonga by now) is about 2 miles to the southwest. Somosomo is also famous for the amount of soft coral in the Somosomo Strait, just west of Somosomo and Taveuni. The reefs along the Somosomo Strait are considered among the best in the South Pacific as tidal currents and constant year–round water temperature create the ideal environment for some 390 species of hard and soft corals and over 1500 species of fish. Other attractions near Somosomo are the Bouma National Park with its waterfalls and Lake Tangimaucia.
