Ordered on 15 June 2015 as part of Carnival Corporation's four-ship LNG order from Meyer Turku, Costa Smeralda's name was announced at her steel-cutting ceremony on 13 September 2017. The keel was laid on 4 July 2018 and she was floated out on 15 March 2019. Delivery was delayed twice, eventually delivered on 5 December 2019. She officially debuted on 21 December 2019 from Savona. In January 2020, she was quarantined at Civitavecchia during the early COVID-19 outbreak; passengers were later cleared. In January 2021, she collided with a crane in Savona, destroying one lifeboat.
