About Capri
The island of Capri is a celebrated beauty spot in the Bay of Naples, 5 km from the Sorrento Peninsula. A resort destination since the Roman Republic, it is renowned for its rugged limestone scenery, the Blue Grotto, Faraglioni sea stacks, and the hilltop towns of Capri and Anacapri.
Marina Grande is the gateway to all island excursions. Rowboats depart here for the Blue Grotto on the northwest coast, the island's signature attraction. A funicular (€2) or series of stairs rises to Capri Town, where four cafés on the main piazza are the evening social hub. From Anacapri, the Monte Solaro Chairlift (€12 round-trip, 15 minutes each way) offers commanding views across the Bay of Naples. Villa Jovis, Tiberius's great cliff-top palace, and the natural Arco Naturale are linked by well-marked footpaths. Boat rentals (from €35 for two hours, up to 5 persons) allow self-guided exploration of the Faraglioni sea stacks and coastal grottos. Villa San Michele in Anacapri, the creation of Axel Munthe, is open to the public.
