Porto Empedocle, Sicily cruise port guide
Porto Empedocle has long been an important fishing and trading port. You can’t miss its most prominent feature – a large tower commissioned in the 16th century by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to protect the Agrigento territory’s reserves of grain against the pirates who haunted this coast. But the region has a much more ancient past, and is exceptionally rich in archaeological treasures associated with the city of Akragas, founded 2500 years ago by Greek colonists. For your appreciation they left behind the Valley of the Temples, site of seven monumental Greek constructions of the 5th and 6th centuries BC.
About Porto Empedocle, Sicily
Porto Empedocle is a port town on the southern coast of Sicily near Agrigento, serving as the gateway port for the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Temples, one of the finest examples of ancient Greek architecture in the world. It is also the nearby point of access to the famous Scala dei Turchi white marl cliffs.
The Valley of the Temples (8 km), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves five major Greek temples in various states of preservation — the Temple of Concordia is one of the best-preserved anywhere in the Greek world. The Scala dei Turchi (15 km) is a stunning natural staircase of brilliant white marl eroded by the sea. The Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento holds the telamon (giant stone figure) from the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Agrigento's medieval hilltop old town, birthplace of Nobel laureate Luigi Pirandello, merits a visit.
