About La Palma, Canary Islands
Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital city and only major port on the island of La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands, situated on the east coast along an ancient lava flow. Founded in 1493, the city served historic trade routes to the Americas and retains well-preserved colonial fortifications and churches. Many cruise line firms call at the port, which also handles ferry connections to Cádiz, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.
The city's most notable landmarks include two historic fortresses — the Castillo de Santa Catalina and the Castillo de la Virgen — erected following pirate raids and still defining features of the seafront. The Iglesia de El Salvador, founded in 1500, is the island's principal Catholic church. Excursions outside the city center lead to Las Nieves and the Real Santuario Insular de las Virgen de las Nieves, the island's patron-saint sanctuary.
