One destination label, two poles. The Antarctic season runs the austral summer, roughly late October to March. Mid-year sailings under the same polar banner head north instead, to Svalbard, Greenland, and the Northwest Passage. Most of these are small expedition ships, priced per night well above a mainstream cruise, so the month you pick moves the budget more than almost anywhere else in cruising. The real choices: which pole, whether to sail the Drake Passage or fly over it, and whether the point is standing on the continent rather than seeing it from the rail.

Best time to cruise Antarctica

Go in January — the heart of the Antarctic summer, 11% below February’s peak fares.

Antarctica has the narrowest season in cruising: ships reach the white continent only from late October to March, the austral summer. This fare curve covers both ends of the Earth. The June–September months in our data are Arctic summer sailings (Svalbard, Greenland, the Northwest Passage), which is exactly why June’s $1,061 median belongs to the other pole. One honest note on the table below. Its weather and daylight rows are measured at Ushuaia, the southern gateway, so the June–September columns show a southern winter while those months’ actual sailings run under the Arctic’s midnight sun. For Antarctica itself, the verdict is January. You get the first penguin chicks, the season’s warmest days, and near-constant light south of the Circle, at $1,417 per person per night, 11% below February’s $1,591. These are small expedition ships, so per-night fares run several times a mainstream cruise; the spread between months is where the money is.

The honest answers

The worst month

The wrong month for Antarctica is really a wrong pole. From April through September the Southern Ocean is closed, and the mid-year polar sailings on this page are Arctic: Svalbard and Greenland, not penguins. Within the season itself, late March is the tail. Whales are still feeding, but colonies are emptying, the ice has long retreated, the weather is turning, and only a handful of departures are left to choose from.

Emperor penguins

The species everyone pictures is the one you almost certainly won’t see. Emperors breed on fast ice far south of the standard Peninsula routes; ordinary itineraries deliver gentoos, chinstraps and Adélies instead. Only a few deep Weddell Sea expeditions ever reach an emperor colony. If that’s the mission, book that specific itinerary, not an Antarctica cruise in general.

Antarctica cruise timing — questions answered

What is the best month to cruise to Antarctica?

January, by our data. It’s the heart of the austral summer: first penguin chicks, the season’s warmest days, near-constant light, at a $1,417 per-person-per-night median across 49 sailings, 11% below February. November trades comfort for pristine ice and courtship; February trades chicks for whales.

What time of year is the Drake Passage the calmest?

There is no reliably calm month. The Drake makes its own rules year-round. The mid-summer core, December through February, tends to average gentler crossings than the season’s early and late edges, but 30-foot swells are possible in any week. If the crossing is the deal-breaker, fly-the-Drake itineraries to King George Island skip it entirely. You pay a premium for that.

What is the average cost of a cruise to Antarctica?

Across 321 upcoming polar sailings, monthly medians run from $1,061 per person per night in June to $1,591 in February. That low sits on the Arctic side of the calendar. In the Antarctic verdict month, January, the median is $1,417 a night; a 7-night slice of that works out to about $9,916, versus $11,139 in February, before flights to the far south of South America.

How much is a 10 day cruise to Antarctica?

Most classic Peninsula itineraries run 10–12 nights. At current medians, a 7-night slice prices at roughly $9,916 in January and $11,139 in February. Scale up by half again for 10 nights and you have the realistic per-person budget, before flights. Suites on the all-suite expedition ships run higher still.

Is Antarctica cruise worth the money?

That's a judgment we can't make for you. The market clearly thinks so: 11 lines send 18 ships across 321 upcoming polar sailings. What the data can do is stop you overpaying for the same continent: January delivers the heart of the season at 11% below February's median.

Are Antarctica cruises cold?

In season, milder than the name suggests. Ushuaia, the gateway, reaches 55°F in December; on the Antarctic Peninsula, summer days typically sit around freezing, and a still, sunny afternoon there can feel warmer than a windy winter day at home. The season exists precisely because it’s the only bearable window. Outside the austral summer, the Southern Ocean ices over and nothing sails.

Is it cheaper to fly or take a cruise to Antarctica?

Sailing, usually. Fly-the-Drake itineraries price their convenience in. A flight to King George Island, then the ship, compresses the trip and skips the crossing, but per-night fares typically run at or above comparable full sailings. The premium buys time and calm seas, not a lower fare.

What is the least expensive way to get to Antarctica?

The lowest-fare route is a big-ship ‘drive-by’: mainstream South America itineraries that cruise Antarctic waters for a few days without landing, at a fraction of expedition medians. The honest catch: ships carrying more than 500 passengers aren’t permitted to land under Antarctic Treaty rules, so you see the ice from the rail, not stand on it. For landings, expedition fares are the price of entry. January’s $1,417-a-night median is the season’s best pairing of experience and price in our data.
