Why this route stands out

A closer look at the journey

Freeport

Travel on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise to Freeport, the second-largest city in the Bahamas after Nassau, and surround yourself with white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. Once the capital of Grand Bahama until it was moved to West End in the 1950s, Freeport today has become a tourist centre par excellence with parks, nature reserves, water sports and its free-trade zone. Freeport’s main commercial district is centred on The Mall, located between Ranfurly Circus and Churchill Square. The cheerful Lucaya district by the port showcases beautiful beachfront hotels, fashionable clubs and pubs, carefully tended lawns and shrubbery, and tidy, candy-coloured shops and houses. Book an MSC excursion and tour the winding trails of Garden of the Groves, an inner-city botanical highlight dominated by a large fig tree. Take a guided walking tour or explore on your own and admire the lush vegetation, birds, cascading waterfalls, fountains and a picturesque chapel. Children will find space to play on the Fern Grove Trail, with leafy shade in between limestone boulders to either side. Or discover an “almost” secret paradise and keep an eye out for wildlife on a guided kayak tour through a 40-acre spread of mangroves, palm and pine trees at Lucayan National Park. The park, established in 1982, is home to caves that are part of the world’s most extended underwater limestone cave systems, with one cave entrance accessible by stairs. If you’re keen on shopping, Freeport is duty free and the perfect place for retail therapy. Don’t miss out on Freeport’s spectacular outdoor market at Port Lucaya Marketplace for its scores of boutiques, restaurants, cafés, Bahamian craft artisans and straw vendors. There’s something here for everyone.

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

With its heady mix of Creole culture and French sophistication, there is more than a pinch of je ne sais quoi in Fort de France. The capital of Martinique, and by far the biggest city in the whole of the French West Indies, if you are looking for Paris in the Caribbean, you’ll find it in Fort de France. The island has been under French govern since 1638 when the first governor of Martinique Jacques Dyel du Parquet commissioned a fort (from which the city takes its name) to keep out invaders. Not even an unsuccessful attack by the British in 1720, nor the French Revolution in 1789, has been able to shake the French govern of the island and today the city’s French and Creole heritage are impossible to untangle. The colonial past is everywhere, take a stroll down the narrow streets and enjoy the remarkable architecture of the Schœlcher Library, St. Louis Cathedral and the Old Town Hall. Among the many legacies Dyel du Parquet left on the island is sugarcane. A drive through the tropical forests will not only reward you with trees bending under the weight of papayas, mangoes and bananas, but will also afford superb vistas of the elegant plant swaying in the breeze. The arrival and subsequent export of sugar brought the French bourgeoisie in their droves and many of their mansions are still standing. Josephine de Beauharnais, the Napoleonic Empress of “not tonight” fame, hails from the island and those interested will find her childhood home, La Pagerie in nearby Trois Ilets.

Port Canaveral, Florida

The beach is just the beginning of the adventures that await guests visiting Port Canaveral, located on the Atlantic coast of Central Florida. The white sands along the beach are made for long days in the sun, while the waters are ideal for sports, including some of the best surfing on the East Coast. Waterfront restaurants serve local seafood and festive drinks on patios overlooking the cruise ships’ arrivals and departures. Nearby, Cocoa Village offers tree-lined streets to stroll while shopping. Port Canaveral, on Florida’s Space Coast, is an ideal launching spot to get to the nearby Kennedy Space Center and to Orlando’s famous theme parks, which are between 60 and 90 minutes away by car. Guests get to see NASA treasures and experience a space-shuttle-launch simulator and even have the chance to meet a veteran astronaut among the adventures at the Kennedy Space Center. Walt Disney World, SeaWorld Orlando and Universal Orlando Resort offer thrill rides, shows and attractions, and invite guests into their themed worlds of fun.
