Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

With its heady mix of Creole culture and French sophistication, there is more than a pinch of je ne sais quoi in Fort de France. The capital of Martinique, and by far the biggest city in the whole of the French West Indies, if you are looking for Paris in the Caribbean, you’ll find it in Fort de France. The island has been under French govern since 1638 when the first governor of Martinique Jacques Dyel du Parquet commissioned a fort (from which the city takes its name) to keep out invaders. Not even an unsuccessful attack by the British in 1720, nor the French Revolution in 1789, has been able to shake the French govern of the island and today the city’s French and Creole heritage are impossible to untangle. The colonial past is everywhere, take a stroll down the narrow streets and enjoy the remarkable architecture of the Schœlcher Library, St. Louis Cathedral and the Old Town Hall. Among the many legacies Dyel du Parquet left on the island is sugarcane. A drive through the tropical forests will not only reward you with trees bending under the weight of papayas, mangoes and bananas, but will also afford superb vistas of the elegant plant swaying in the breeze. The arrival and subsequent export of sugar brought the French bourgeoisie in their droves and many of their mansions are still standing. Josephine de Beauharnais, the Napoleonic Empress of “not tonight” fame, hails from the island and those interested will find her childhood home, La Pagerie in nearby Trois Ilets.

Montego Bay

Christopher Columbus anchored his ships in Montego Bay in 1494 when he discovered Jamaica on his way from Cuba, naming the bay “Golfo de Buen Tiempo,” or “Fair Weather Gulf.” It wasn’t until 1655 that Montego Bay, today Jamaica’s second-largest city, came under British rule. Those influences are still evident in the city’s colourful British colonial architecture, including St. James Parish Church, and along the city’s cobblestone streets, which bear the secrets of the island’s slavery past at Sam Sharpe Square and the Cage, a prison for runaway slaves. Today, the city centre is dominated by Gloucester Avenue, the main street or “Hip Strip,” replete with souvenir shops, bars and locals touting their wares. When you arrive on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise to Jamaica’s northwest coast, explore Jamaica like a local on one of our MSC excursions. Our Go Native tour lets you follow the rhythm of reggae, observe endemic flora and fauna, enjoy a typical Jamaican meal, and unwind on a picture-postcard beach. Or take an MSC excursion to Doctor's Cave, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island that was believed in the 1920’s to have waters with curative powers. Named after an old entrance through a cave and the bathing club of doctors who used to frequent it, the beach boasts beautiful white sand, majestic palm trees, and crystal-clear water sheltered from the currents. As you may have heard, Jamaica is the home of jerk. For a mouth-watering culinary adventure, bring your appetite along as you taste your way through three restaurants and quench the heat with Jamaica's local brews on an exclusive Martha Stewart excursion curated for MSC. In addition to the jerk tastings, a visit to the Harbour Street Craft Market, a rum punch mixology class and a catamaran sunset sail around the harbour is included in the package. Or let us take you on a thrilling adventure through Rose Hall Mansion, where stories of witchcraft, black magic, murder and slaves exacting revenge on their masters abound at the Great House, one of the old manor houses of the sugar lords. Rose Hall, an 18th-century Georgian-Jamaican style mansion belonging to the Palmer family, sits on a hilltop, offering a fantastic panoramic view of the entire coast. The house is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall, who murdered her four husbands and numerous slaves working on the surrounding sugar plantation.

Puerto Limon

From mountainous cloud forests and volcanoes to tropical rainforests, Costa Rica in Central America is renowned for its biodiversity and environmental conservation. When you arrive on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruisein Puerto Limón, you’ll discover the biggest city on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast as well as the most important port in the country. From the port, Limón is a perfect starting point for adventurous explorers on one of many MSC excursions that will let you be one with nature in what is called Costa Rica’s Amazon. Enjoy a boat adventure down the jungle-fringed Tortuguero Canal, spotting orchids, water lilies, crocodiles, spider monkeys, manatees and otters along the way. Wave to the locals busy on the banks or in dugout canoes on the water as you pass. On another MSC excursion, spend half a day meeting some of Costa Rica’s cutest creatures: sloths. The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, founded as a not-for-profit rescue centre in 1997, lets you mingle with some of the coolest dudes in the jungle with their languid movements and permanently smiling faces. Your time at the sanctuary also includes a canoe ride along the freshwater of the Estrella River, a habitat for 180 bird species, monkeys, turtles and scores of butterflies. Soar through the tree canopy on an aerial tramway at Veragua Rainforest Research & Adventure Park, walk to a beautiful waterfall and rub shoulders with myriad butterflies, including the incredible blue morpho. Then, on this thrilling MSC excursion, zip line across 11 observation plat-forms and 9 traverses on an amazing course which has you gliding over the rainforest canopy, spotting monkeys, sloths and toucans in the trees. Or explore Afro-Caribbean culture, passing through Limón’s oldest neighbourhoods with houses on stilts and banana and cassava plantations, before watching local dancers perform to Caribbean rhythms and share Costa Rican traditions.
