Day 1 Sep 23, 2028 Civitavecchia, Rome 06:00 – 17:00 11.0 hrs ashore All roads lead to Rome, and with good reason - this city is one of the world’s most thrilling, offering unmatched history along every street. An evocative, inspiring and utterly artistic capital of unrivalled cultural impact, Rome is a city of back-to-back landmarks, which will take you on an exhilarating journey through the ages. This may be one of the world’s oldest cities, but it’s well and truly lived in. The ruins are punctuated with murmuring cafes, and the outdoor seating of restaurants sprawls out across piazzas, enticing you to sample tangles of creamy pasta and crispy pizzas. Rome’s incredible Roman Forum is littered with the ruins of its ancient administrations, which have stood firm for 2,000 years, since the times when the area was the centre of the Western world. Few sites are more simultaneously beautiful and haunting than that of the storied Colosseum, which looms deep into Rome’s rich blue sky. Take a tour to learn details of the grisly goings-on within. Day 5 Sep 27, 2028 Porto Empedocle, Sicily 08:00 – 20:00 12.0 hrs ashore Porto Empedocle has long been an important fishing and trading port. You can’t miss its most prominent feature – a large tower commissioned in the 16th century by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to protect the Agrigento territory’s reserves of grain against the pirates who haunted this coast. But the region has a much more ancient past, and is exceptionally rich in archaeological treasures associated with the city of Akragas, founded 2500 years ago by Greek colonists. For your appreciation they left behind the Valley of the Temples, site of seven monumental Greek constructions of the 5th and 6th centuries BC.

Day 6 Sep 28, 2028 Siracusa, Sicily 08:00 – 20:00 12.0 hrs ashore Honey-coloured Siracusa is a staggering UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an extraordinary Sicilian city of immense ancient history. The modern population is a fraction of what it was at the city’s heyday around 400 BC, when Athens’ might was successfully challenged and faced down, reinforcing the city’s incredible power and status. Siracusa’s historical nucleus waits to be discovered on the compact islet of Ortygia. The city was founded here, but grew over time, spreading across to the mainland. Adapted long ago to serve as Split’s town centre, Diocletian’s Palace is certainly not an archaeological “site”. Although set-piece buildings such as Diocletian’s mausoleum (now the cathedral) and the Temple of Jupiter (now a baptistery) still remain, other aspects of the palace have been tinkered with so much by successive generations that it is no longer recognizable as an ancient Roman structure. Best place to start exploring with an MSC excursion the seaward side of the palace is Split’s broad and lively Riva. Running along the palace’s southern facade, into which shops, cafés and a warren of tiny flats have been built, the Riva is where a large part of the city’s population congregates day and night to meet friends, catch up on gossip or idle away an hour or two in a café.
