Why this route stands out

A closer look at the journey

New Orleans

With its atmospheric French Quarter, New Orleans oozes character quite unlike any other American city. It's the place where anything seems to go - that's why Americans call it the "Big Easy". Its melting pot of influences; African, French and Caribbean, give this city on the Mississippi River a unique vibrancy, not least after dark when the music clubs and bars strike up with authentic jazz and blues sounds. Preservation Hall is only the best known of its many late-night music haunts. The diverse cultural mix also adds spice to its famous Creole and Cajun cuisine. Although a relatively small city, especially by US standards, walking will not get you around all of its sights so why not climb on board one of its historic streetcars, the oldest continuously operating system in the world? Jackson Square in the heart of the Vieux Carre (French Quarter) is a good daytime starting point to explore the area's late 18th century houses with their magnolia-draped balconies and hidden courtyards.

Montego Bay

Christopher Columbus anchored his ships in Montego Bay in 1494 when he discovered Jamaica on his way from Cuba, naming the bay “Golfo de Buen Tiempo,” or “Fair Weather Gulf.” It wasn’t until 1655 that Montego Bay, today Jamaica’s second-largest city, came under British rule. Those influences are still evident in the city’s colourful British colonial architecture, including St. James Parish Church, and along the city’s cobblestone streets, which bear the secrets of the island’s slavery past at Sam Sharpe Square and the Cage, a prison for runaway slaves. Today, the city centre is dominated by Gloucester Avenue, the main street or “Hip Strip,” replete with souvenir shops, bars and locals touting their wares. When you arrive on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles cruise to Jamaica’s northwest coast, explore Jamaica like a local on one of our MSC excursions. Our Go Native tour lets you follow the rhythm of reggae, observe endemic flora and fauna, enjoy a typical Jamaican meal, and unwind on a picture-postcard beach. Or take an MSC excursion to Doctor's Cave, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island that was believed in the 1920’s to have waters with curative powers. Named after an old entrance through a cave and the bathing club of doctors who used to frequent it, the beach boasts beautiful white sand, majestic palm trees, and crystal-clear water sheltered from the currents. As you may have heard, Jamaica is the home of jerk. For a mouth-watering culinary adventure, bring your appetite along as you taste your way through three restaurants and quench the heat with Jamaica's local brews on an exclusive Martha Stewart excursion curated for MSC. In addition to the jerk tastings, a visit to the Harbour Street Craft Market, a rum punch mixology class and a catamaran sunset sail around the harbour is included in the package. Or let us take you on a thrilling adventure through Rose Hall Mansion, where stories of witchcraft, black magic, murder and slaves exacting revenge on their masters abound at the Great House, one of the old manor houses of the sugar lords. Rose Hall, an 18th-century Georgian-Jamaican style mansion belonging to the Palmer family, sits on a hilltop, offering a fantastic panoramic view of the entire coast. The house is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall, who murdered her four husbands and numerous slaves working on the surrounding sugar plantation.

Cozumel

A forty-kilometre-long island directly off the coast from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel is a renowned cruise-ship call: nearly every day, up to ten cruise ships dock at one of the island’s three dedicated piers, all just south of the only town, San Miguel. A holiday to Mexico with MSC Cruises will present you with restaurants, souvenir shops and jewellery stores, all along the malecón(Av Rafael Melgar) in downtown San Miguel. If you fancy a museum, the attractive Museo de la Isla de Cozumel has small displays of the flora, fauna and marine life of the island, as well as a good collection of Maya artefacts and old photos. If you’re not a diver, there’s a certain appeal in wandering the relaxed inland blocks of San Miguel, away from the piers, spotting Maya ruins and birds (the Maya called the island cuzamil – “land of the swallows”) in the dense forests and being the only person on the windswept eastern beaches. Midway across the island, San Gervasio is the only excavated Maya site on Cozumel. With several small temples connected by sacbeob, or long white roads, it was one of the many independent city-states that survived the fall of Chichén Itzá, flourishing between 1200 AD and 1650 AD. As part of a larger nature reserve the site is worth a visit for the numerous birds and butterflies you can spot early in the morning or late in the day. Another place to visit is Xcaret, a surprisingly pleasant theme park: it offers all the Yucatán’s attractions in one handy place, with a museum, a tropical aquarium, a “Maya village”, a beach, some small authentic ruins, pools and more than a kilometre of subterranean rivers down which you can swim, snorkel or float. On the other hand, neighbouring Xplor is dedicated to ziplines and other outdoor adventure.

Carnival Liberty

We think you should have a great time at sea. Carnival Liberty feels the same way! This is one ship that’s ready to put its fun where your vacation is, with plenty of ways to enjoy your time away. All day long, Carnival Liberty can be found serving up signature burgers designed by Guy Fieri, right there at Guy’s Burger Joint — and look! — just over there is SkyBox Sports Bar: a double-header of a sports bar that brings together live sports on TV and lively sports-gaming competition... oh, not to mention great drinks! Enjoy BlueIguana Cantina tacos and burritos on Lido deck — made fresh, and fast, while you wait — plus two great bars: one rum-slinging, one tequila-wielding, both dueling for your heart. That’s right: just a quick stroll from RedFrog Rum Bar you’ll find BlueIguana Tequila Bar. On the entertainment side of things, Carnival Liberty features two of our best, live on stage. First there’s Playlist Productions, where pros sing and dance their hearts out, performing high-energy themed revues of tunes you know, backed by amazing visual effects. Then there’s Hasbro, The Game Show, where you might get the chance to come on down, get up on stage and compete in larger-than-life versions of your family-favorite Hasbro games… each with a unique twist. Kids have three unique youth spaces where they can hang out with others their age and enjoy supervised activities, games and more. You might call Carnival Liberty a vacation spot that’s just full of great vacation spots… and we’d agree!
