Sun Princess was ordered from Fincantieri on 23 July 2018; the final contract for the first two Sphere-class vessels was signed in March 2019. Her keel was laid on 8 March 2023 in Monfalcone. Sea trials were completed in November 2023 and January 2024. Delivery was mutually delayed from 8 February to 28 February 2024 for undisclosed reasons. Her naming ceremony was held in Barcelona on 23 April 2024, with Hannah Waddingham serving as sponsor. She sailed her maiden voyage on 28 February 2024 in the Mediterranean. In October 2024, she transitioned to Caribbean operations from Florida after an onboard refurbishment.
