MSC Splendida was ordered as part of a two-ship deal with STX France on 16 November 2005. Steel cutting began on 12 April 2007, the ship launched on 18 July 2008, and sea trials were completed between 21–27 May 2009. The ship was delivered on 4 July 2009 and embarked on her maiden voyage the same day. Christened by Sophia Loren on 12 July 2009 in Barcelona. She was refurbished in 2017 before deployment to Asia. In March 2020, she was at sea during the COVID-19 pandemic.
