Pio XI
South America
Also known as Brüggen Glacier, the magnificent Pio XI Glacier, third largest mass of ice after Antarctica and Greenland, is the most massive glacial outflow from the Southern Ice Field of continental Chile and the largest glacier in South America. Surprisingly, it is also the ONLY glacier in Patagonia that actually – and mysteriously – grows from year to year rather than recedes: some say because of the very stable quality of the ice as well as a long annual season of solid precipitation.
Porto Grande, Brazil
South America
Porto Grande Bay, also Mindelo Bay, is a bay on the north coast of the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. The main city of São Vicente, Mindelo, is situated at the bay. The Porto Grande Bay is a natural harbour.
San Carlos, Argentina
South America
San Carlos de Bariloche (commonly called Bariloche) is a town in Argentina’s Patagonia region. It borders Nahuel Huapi, a large glacial lake surrounded by the Andes Mountains. Bariloche is known for its Swiss alpine-style architecture and its chocolate, sold in shops lining Calle Mitre, the main street. It's also a popular base for hiking and skiing the nearby mountains and exploring the surrounding Lake District.
