Whakaari / White Island, commonly known as White Island or Whakaari, is an active andesite stratovolcano situated 48 km from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. The island covers an area of approximately 325 ha, which is only the peak of a much larger submarine volcano.

Whakaari / White Island is New Zealand's most active marine volcano, located 48 km off the Bay of Plenty coast. Following a deadly eruption on 9 December 2019 that killed 22 people (including 38 cruise ship passengers on shore excursions from Ovation of the Seas), tourist access to the island has been severely restricted and remains under ongoing legal and safety review.
