About Weddell Sea, Antarctica
Port Lockroy is a natural harbour on Goudier Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, housing the world's most southerly operational post office and one of Antarctica's most popular cruise ship destinations. The former British wartime base now operates as a museum and wildlife reserve, with approximately 18,000 cruise visitors arriving each Antarctic summer (November–March).
The restored Operation Tabarin wartime base is a living museum that visitors can walk through, with artefacts from the 1940s scientific research station still in place. The island's Gentoo penguin population of around 800 breeding pairs are remarkably habituated to visitors. The souvenir shop raises funds for the conservation of Antarctic historic sites. The Lemaire Channel, often visited en route, is among the most photographed places in Antarctica for its sheer mountain walls and tranquil ice-filled waters.
