About Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo is a beautiful port city at the mouth of the Lima River in northern Portugal, known for its historic monuments, traditional folk culture, filigree gold jewelry, Blue Flag beaches, and the hilltop Sanctuary of Santa Luzia. It is a stop on Atlantic coastal cruise itineraries.

The Santa Luzia Sanctuary (begun 1904, completed 1959) offers sweeping views of coast and countryside from its hilltop setting. The Praça da República, flanked by the ornate 16th-century Former City Hall and the Consistory of Mercy building, is one of northern Portugal's finest Renaissance squares. The Gil Eanes hospital ship museum at the port is a Viana specialty. Praia do Cabedelo on the Lima's south bank is the most popular beach for water sports.
