About Valence
Valence is a river port on the left bank of the Rhône in southeastern France, often called 'the gateway to the South of France.' A stop on European river cruises, the city blends Roman heritage with medieval architecture and is surrounded by the vineyards of the northern Rhône Valley wine region.
Saint-Apollinaire Cathedral (1063–1099) anchors the old town with its Romanesque grandeur. The Maison des Têtes (1528–1532) is a must-see Renaissance mansion covered in carved portrait heads. Vieux Valence holds the greatest concentration of listed historic monuments. The surrounding Rhône Valley is prime wine country — Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage appellations are just north.
