Valdez cruise port guide
With its towering peaks, Valdez sits quietly on the shore of Prince William Sound. Less than 25 miles east of the Columbia Glacier, Valdez is the most northerly ice-free port in the Western Hemisphere and the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The town and port were named by the Spanish explorer Don Salvador Fidalgo in 1790. Valdez experienced a boom in 1897-98 when gold-seekers arrived looking for what was being advertised in the lower 48 states as the “All-American Route" to Alaska's interior and the Klondike gold fields. With its year-round ice-free port, Valdez was an entry point for people and transportation of goods going to the interior during the gold rush.
About Valdez
Valdez is a small city at the head of Prince William Sound in southcentral Alaska, best known as the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and the site of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The city sits at the base of dramatic mountains surrounded by glaciers and offers stunning wilderness scenery, making it a growing cruise and adventure destination.
Prince William Sound is the primary draw — its kayaking, flightseeing, glacier-viewing, and wildlife-watching options are world-class. Keystone Canyon, just 16 km up the Richardson Highway, offers stunning waterfalls and the eerie remnants of a tunnel dug during the railroad competition of 1907. The Worthington Glacier is accessible by road. Charter fishing for halibut and salmon is popular in summer.
