Vaasa cruise port guide

Vaasa is a city on the west coast of Finland. It received its charter in 1606, during the reign of Charles IX of Sweden and is named after the Royal House of Vasa. Vaasa has a population of 67,569, and is the regional capital of Ostrobothnia.

About Vaasa

Vaasa is the bilingual (Finnish/Swedish) capital of Ostrobothnia on Finland's west coast, situated on the Gulf of Bothnia. Founded in 1606 and rebuilt after an 1852 fire, the city is noted for its handsome 19th-century urban planning, the nearby Kvarken Archipelago UNESCO World Heritage Site, and daily ferry connections to Umeå, Sweden.

The Kvarken Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage site just offshore, is the premier natural attraction — a unique landscape continuously rising from the sea due to post-glacial rebound. Old Vaasa preserves the atmospheric ruins of the original town, including the medieval St. Mary's Church. The contemporary city center offers the Kauppapuistikko esplanade, the Market Hall, and the architecturally diverse university campuses along the waterfront.
