About Uwajima
Uwajima is a port city in southwestern Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku island, facing Uwa Bay on the Seto Inland Sea. Known for its Edo-period castle, traditional bullfighting, and the unusual Taga Shrine fertility complex, Uwajima offers a mix of history and unique cultural attractions for cruise visitors.
Uwajima Castle is one of only 12 surviving original Japanese castles with an Edo-period donjon — a compact three-story tower surrounded by stone walls and scenic grounds. Taga Shrine and its adjacent sex museum draw curious visitors for their frank celebration of fertility. The Date Family Museum chronicles the local daimyo dynasty. Pilgrimage temples Ryuko-ji (No. 41) and Butsumoku-ji (No. 42) attract those following the 88-temple Shikoku route.
