Uummannaq cruise port guide
Fjords were carved by glaciers and Uummannaq Fjord must have been carved by an enormous one in the past. This fjord is about 160 km (100 miles) long and 24–48 km (15–30 miles) wide as it extends eastward to the Greenland ice cap. The main fjord divides into several smaller fjords also fed by glaciers. Store Glacier, or Great Qarajaq, is one of the world’s fastest moving at 5.7 km (3.5 miles) a year. It sheds icebergs that float, melt, develop strange shapes and pose for photographers.
About Uummannaq
Uummannaq is a small island town in northwestern Greenland, dominated by the iconic heart-shaped Uummannaq Mountain, the most prominent peak on the Arctic coast of western Greenland. The port is shallow and cannot accommodate large cruise ships directly, making it a tender port for visiting vessels. Cruise ships such as Hurtigruten visit the island, which is one of the cultural centers of the region.
Uummannaq Mountain is the signature attraction — its twin granite summits create the distinctive heart shape (uummannaq means 'heart-shaped' in Greenlandic). The island also features Blue Lake and Tasersuaq reservoir, and a restored turf house serving as the 'Santa Claus Castle.' Individual sightseeing and wildlife boats can be chartered through Uummannaq Tourist Service.
