About Progreso
Progreso is a port city on Mexico's Gulf Coast in the state of Yucatán, approximately 30 km north of the state capital Mérida. The port is home to the world's longest pier at 8,019 metres and serves as the primary cruise gateway to Mérida and the ancient Maya archaeological sites of the Yucatán Peninsula.
The dominant shore excursion is the 30-minute drive to Mérida, a well-preserved colonial city renowned for its Sunday markets and museums. Beyond Mérida, the Maya site of Dzibilchaltún lies just 16 km north of the capital and is easily combined with a city tour. The more distant Chichén Itzá demands a full day. Cenote swimming at Cuzamá or Celestún flamingo-watching are other popular options.
