About Portobelo, Panama
Portobelo is a historic town on the Caribbean coast of Panama, home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising Spanish colonial fortifications from the 17th and 18th centuries. Christopher Columbus reportedly named it 'Puerto Bello' (Beautiful Port) in 1502 after seeking shelter from a storm.
The Bay of Portobelo contains numerous well-preserved fortifications. The Santiago fortifications include the Castle of Santiago de la Gloria (Gloria Castle) with its hilltop stronghold. The San Jerónimo Battery Fort guards the eastern approaches. San Lorenzo Castle, approximately 80 km from Portobelo at the mouth of the Chagres River, completes the dual-site UNESCO inscription.
