About Porto Grande, Cape Verde
Mindelo is the main city of São Vicente island, Cape Verde, built around Porto Grande — one of the finest natural harbors in the Atlantic. Historically an important mid-Atlantic coaling and re-supply stop, Mindelo is now known as Cape Verde's cultural capital and a vibrant music hub, home to the morna tradition of singer Cesária Évora.
Praça Amílcar Cabral, with its striking replica Belém Tower, is the gathering point of Mindelo's vibrant café and music culture. The waterfront fish market is an atmospheric early-morning scene. The short ferry to Santo Antão (15 km) is the most popular excursion — the island's green ribeiras offer some of Cape Verde's finest hiking. The volcanic Monte Verde (774 m) on São Vicente itself provides excellent views.
