Porto Ercole, Italy cruise port guide
Porto Ercole is an Italian town located in the municipality of Monte Argentario, in the Province of Grosseto, Tuscany. It is one of the two major towns that form the township, along with Porto Santo Stefano. Its name means "Port Hercules".
About Porto Ercole, Italy
Porto Ercole is a charming fishing village and harbour on Monte Argentario, a promontory on the Tuscan coast in the Province of Grosseto. One of two principal settlements on Monte Argentario (with Porto Santo Stefano), it is known for its Spanish fortresses, clear waters, and as the location where the painter Caravaggio died in 1610.
The Spanish fortresses above the harbour offer panoramic views of Orbetello's lagoon and the two tombolos connecting Monte Argentario to the mainland. The Orbetello lagoon, 8 km away, is an important nature reserve with flamingos and the medieval town of Orbetello. Isola del Giglio, reached by ferry from nearby Porto Santo Stefano, is a popular day trip with crystal-clear waters. The Tombolo di Feniglia's pine forest is ideal for walking.
