Portland is a coastal city in southwestern Victoria, Australia, on Discovery Bay. It has Victoria's only deep-water port west of Melbourne and serves as an occasional cruise call on southern Australia itineraries. Portland is known as the gateway to the Great South West Walk and the volcanic Budj Bim Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Budj Bim (60 km north), the volcanic landscape of the Gunditjmara people, is the primary excursion: lava channels were engineered into sophisticated eel traps and ponds over millennia. Cape Bridgewater (20 km west) features a large Australian fur seal colony visible from the clifftops year-round, plus a petrified forest. Portland is the starting point for the 250 km Great South West Walk.
