About Poros

Poros is a small green island in the Saronic Gulf, about 58 km south of Piraeus, separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow 200-meter channel. It is a popular day trip and weekend destination from Athens, with pine forests, charming neoclassical mansions, and an atmospheric waterfront.

The 1927 clock tower is the town's signature sight. On the forested larger island of Kalavria, the ruins of the ancient Sanctuary of Poseidon mark the spot where Demosthenes took refuge and died in 322 BC. The Monastery of Zoodohos Pygi is a serene retreat with fine Byzantine icons. Sandy beaches are found along the southern shore.
