Ponza cruise port guide
Birthplace of the famous magician who seduced Ulysses, this magnificent volcanic rock at the centre of the Tyrrhenian archipelago is also known as the Island of Circe. One glimpse of Ponza’s wild terrain and you will understand why Ulysses delayed his return to Ithaca. Its rugged coastline of jagged rocks and cliffs, sculpted by the wind and the waves is riddled with caves which the Romans once used for bathing.
About Ponza
Ponza is the largest of the Pontine Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, located off the coast of central Italy between Rome and Naples. The crescent-shaped island with dramatic volcanic cliffs, crystal waters, and a picturesque harbor is a beloved Italian summer destination.
The picturesque Porto di Ponza with its ring of pastel buildings is the island's first and lasting impression. The ancient Roman Gallery — a tunnel cut through the cliffs to link the port to the former Chiaia di Luna beach — is a remarkable archaeological feat. Boat tours circumnavigate the island revealing natural arches, sea stacks, and grottos including the legendary Grotta della Maga Circe. Cala Feola and Cala Fonte are the best swimming spots.
