About Papeete
Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti, serving as the primary hub for cruising throughout the Society Islands and beyond. A bustling port city combining French and Polynesian character, it offers the famous Papeete Market, black pearl shops, roulotte food trucks, and easy ferry access to Moorea. The city's Faa'a International Airport is the only international gateway in French Polynesia.
The Papeete Market opens before dawn and is the best place to buy loose black pearls, Tahitian vanilla, tapa cloth, and local produce. The evening roulottes (food trucks) along the waterfront park serve poisson cru, chow mein, crêpes, and Chinese-French fusion dishes. The Robert Wan Pearl Museum on the waterfront is free. Ferry services to Moorea depart regularly throughout the day.
