Paita is a leading seaport city in northwestern Peru, 1,089 km northwest of Lima and 57 km northwest of Piura, the regional capital. Founded on 30 March 1532 by Francisco Pizarro, who named it San Francisco de Paita of Good Hope, it sits on a small peninsula at latitude 05°S, facing the Bay of Paita, sheltered by the Punta Paita headland. With a population of about 179,000 (2016), the city handles significant regional trade. The USNS Comfort hospital ship has called here. Timezone is PET (UTC−5).
