Otranto is a coastal town in southern Italy’s Apulia region. It’s home to the 15th-century Aragonese Castle and 11th-century Otranto Cathedral, with a rose window and ornate mosaic flooring. At the harbor, Torre Matta tower has sweeping sea views. Nearby beaches include the popular Alimini Beach. Inland are 2 lakes: the saltwater Alimini Grande and spring-fed Alimini Piccolo. South is the Punta Palascìa lighthouse.
About Otranto
Otranto is a small coastal town of about 5,500 residents in Puglia (Apulia), southern Italy, located on the eastern tip of the Salento peninsula and recognized as one of 'I Borghi più belli d'Italia' (most beautiful villages). It is the easternmost town in Italy, with the Strait of Otranto connecting the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea. The town features a magnificent 12th-century Cathedral with a unique mosaic floor, the Aragonese Castle, and a dramatic history including a celebrated Ottoman siege in 1480.
The Cathedral of Otranto is the highlight, with a stunning 12th-century mosaic floor depicting a 'Tree of Life', Old Testament scenes, and fanciful medieval figures. The relics of the 800 Martyrs beheaded in 1480 for refusing to renounce Christianity are displayed in the cathedral. The Aragonese Castle offers spectacular views from its bastions. The Church of San Pietro contains rare Byzantine frescoes. The coastline north and south of Otranto has some of Puglia's finest beaches.
