Opatija cruise port guide
Opatija is a town in western Croatia, just southwest of Rijeka on the Adriatic coast. The city's most prestigious sight is the Villa Angiolina, which was built in 1844 by Iginio Scarpa, a rich merchant from Rijeka. This villa, transformed into a hotel, gave a boost to tourism to this town. It became a fashionable destination for the Austrian imperial family and Austrian nobility. Soon more luxury hotels and villas were built, such as the Hotel Kvarner, built in 1884. A new railway line was extended to Rijeka, from where one could go by tram to Opatija. The Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I used to spend here several months during winter. Many of these late 19th-century luxury hotels and villas have survived to present times.
About Opatija
Opatija is a historic seaside resort town on the Kvarner Gulf in western Croatia, about 13 km southwest of Rijeka. Known as the 'Croatian Cannes', it was one of the premier resorts of the Austro-Hungarian empire and retains magnificent Belle Époque hotels, villas, and a 12 km lungomare promenade. The town has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters.
The 12 km Lungo mare promenade (Footpath of Franz Joseph) is Opatija's defining feature, linking the town with Lovran along a scenic coastline backed by laurel woods. Villa Angiolina and its park represent the origins of modern tourism here. The iconic Maiden with the Seagull statue and the ornate Church of the Annunciation add to the town's visual appeal. Mount Učka, rising steeply behind the town, offers serious hiking with panoramic views.
