Northwest Spitsbergen National Park is one of six national parks on Spitsbergen, protecting the rugged northwestern tip of Svalbard's main island. A remote wilderness of glaciers, fjords, and Arctic wildlife accessible only by expedition cruise ship.
The northwest coastline offers some of Svalbard's most spectacular scenery, with towering glacier fronts calving into the sea, precipitous bird cliffs hosting millions of seabirds, and Arctic wildlife encounters—polar bears, walrus colonies, reindeer, and the elusive Arctic fox. Nearby Ny-Ålesund (78.9°N) is the world's northernmost permanent civilian settlement and a base for international Arctic research. The abandoned Soviet mining town of Pyramiden, accessible by zodiac from expedition vessels, provides a haunting glimpse of Cold War-era Arctic industrialization. The island has served as the launching point for legendary Arctic expeditions by Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton.
