About Nordaustlandet Island

Nordaustlandet is the second largest island in the Svalbard archipelago at 14,443 km², lying between approximately 78°-81° north latitude. It is home to Austfonna, Europe's widest glacier at 8,412 km², and is part of Norway's extensive system of national parks and nature reserves covering two-thirds of Svalbard.

The primary draw is the vast ice wilderness of Austfonna glacier, which alone covers an area 3-4 times the size of Luxembourg. Wildlife in the surrounding waters and coastal areas includes polar bears, walrus, Arctic fox, reindeer, and numerous seabird colonies. The North Atlantic Current keeps western Svalbard waters relatively ice-free in summer, enabling expedition vessels to navigate around the island during the brief July-August season. Access to landing sites requires armed guides due to polar bear presence.
