Nanaimo cruise port guide
A sweet Canadian city tucked into the east coast of Vancouver Island, only 55 km across the Strait of Georgia from Vancouver, British Colombia. Surrounded by water and spectacular ocean views, it’s a growing urban center where sea lions play and seaplanes take flight. Nanaimo was originally established as a Hudson Bay Company trading post, later becoming known for coal exports. A harbor sheltered by islands, Nanaimo used to be considered mostly at gateway to the mainland but has evolved into a growing vibrant urban center that has lots to offer.
About Nanaimo
Nanaimo is the 'Harbour City' on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, serving as a cruise port and gateway to the island's natural wonders. The city completed a $22 million cruise ship facility expansion in 2011 and is well positioned as a call port for Alaska and Pacific Northwest itineraries. Visitors enjoy the historic downtown waterfront, the preserved 1853 Nanaimo Bastion, and easy access to Gulf Islands and wilderness areas.
Nanaimo enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with mild, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. Summer daytime temperatures average around 25°C; the city is unusually dry for its latitude due to Vancouver Island's mountains shielding it from Pacific weather systems. The best cruise season runs June through September.
