The Port of Kolkata (Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port) is India's only riverine major port, located on the Hooghly River about 126 km from the sea. The oldest operating port in India, opened in 1870, it serves as a gateway to West Bengal, Northeast India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The Ballard Pier-style passenger terminal handles limited cruise traffic.
Victoria Memorial is the city's most iconic landmark, a vast marble tribute to the British Raj set in a park. The Howrah Bridge is one of the world's most recognisable urban structures, thronging with traffic and pedestrians around the clock. Murshidabad, once the Nawabs' capital, lies 200 km upriver and is a standard excursion on Ganges river itineraries, featuring the 1000-door Hazarduari Palace and fine examples of 18th-century Bengal architecture. Dakshineswar and Belur Math on the Hooghly's banks are important Hindu pilgrimage sites. The Sundarbans mangrove delta to the south offers wildlife encounters including tigers.
