About Montebello Islands , Australia

The Montebello Islands are an archipelago of about 174 small islands off the Pilbara coast of northwestern Australia, forming a marine conservation reserve of over 58,000 hectares. The islands are historically significant as the site of three British nuclear weapons tests in 1952 and 1956, and are now a pristine marine reserve supporting important seabird colonies including fairy terns, sooty oystercatchers, and osprey. Expedition cruise ships visit for their exceptional diving, snorkeling, and wildlife.
