About Majuli, Assam
Majuli is a large river island in the Brahmaputra River in Assam, northeast India, and is the world's largest inhabited river island. It is home to the unique Vaishnavite Sattra (monastery) culture, a living tradition of Assamese performing arts, dance, and Neo-Vaishnavism established by the saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva in the 15th century. The island is visited on Brahmaputra river cruise itineraries, which explore Assam's cultural and natural heritage including Kaziranga National Park and the one-horned rhinoceros.
