About Maizuru
Maizuru is a city in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, surrounding a deep inlet of the Sea of Japan on the northeastern coast of the Kansai region. With a population of about 78,644 (2022), it consists of two distinct parts: Nishi-Maizuru (West), the old commercial port district, and Higashi-Maizuru (East), the naval port district developed in the 20th century. After World War II, Maizuru was a key port for returning Japanese servicemen and detainees from continental Asia for over 13 years; today it remains a key headquarters of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
