Magellan Strait cruise port guide
This 360-mile strait isolates the Tierra del Fuego archipelago from the rest of the South American continent, and is named after the ambitious Portuguese explorer and mariner Ferdinand Magellan. You'll retrace Magellan's route as you make the shortest crossing from Atlantic to Pacific between two land masses this side of the Panama Canal.
About Magellan Strait
The Strait of Magellan is a navigable sea route in southern Chile separating mainland South America from the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, approximately 570 km long and as narrow as 2 km at its narrowest point. Named after Ferdinand Magellan, who first navigated it in 1520, it is the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans — shorter and more sheltered than the Drake Passage. Cruise ships transit the strait on South American and Antarctic itineraries, typically departing from or arriving at Punta Arenas or Ushuaia. Maritime piloting is now compulsory.
