Die Stadt Magdeburg an der Elbe ist die Landeshauptstadt von Sachsen-Anhalt. Zu den markanten Sehenswürdigkeiten zählt der gotische Dom zu Magdeburg im Zentrum. Der aus Holz errichtete Jahrtausendturm ist mit 60 Metern Höhe das höchste Holzgebäude der Welt und kann von Besuchern begangen und bestiegen werden. Magdeburg is the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, situated on the Elbe river. Founded by Charlemagne in 805, it was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the Holy Roman Empire and a notable member of the Hanseatic League. The city is known for its cathedral (where Holy Roman Emperor Otto I is buried), the famous Magdeburg hemispheres experiment by Otto von Guericke, and a resilient history that saw the city devastated in the Thirty Years' War (1631) and World War II. Magdeburg is a stop on Elbe river cruise itineraries between Hamburg and Prague.
