The island is dominated by Mount Pico (Pico Alto), Portugal's highest peak at 2,351 meters, and is UNESCO-listed for its historic wine-growing landscape of volcanic basalt lava fields. Madalena faces neighboring Faial island across a narrow channel and is a regular stop on Azores cruise itineraries.
