Limassol cruise port guide
Limassol on Cyprus' south coast is the island's largest seaside resort. It meanders for ten miles along the coast with the Troodos Mountains providing a magnificent backdrop. Sunshine, blue sky and beaches are the criteria that attract scores of vacationers each year. The more adventurous traveler, too, finds worthwhile attractions, such as medieval castles, remote mountain villages, archaeological sites dating back to 7,000 B.C., and inviting cedar forests, orange groves and vineyards. Although the easternmost island of the Mediterranean, eastern culture is augmented by a large dose of European. Rome and Byzantium, the Crusaders and the Venetians, the Turks and the British have all left their traces. Since the Middle Ages, when the Crusaders held Cyprus under Richard the Lionhearted, Limassol has been known to traders for its wine and sugar cane. Today, the island's second largest city is the hub of its wine-making industry and an important commercial center.
About Limassol
Limassol is Cyprus's principal seaport and second-largest city, situated on the island's southern Mediterranean coast between the ancient city-kingdoms of Amathus and Kourion. The city offers cruise passengers a layered experience spanning medieval Crusader history at Limassol Castle, well-preserved archaeological sites, and a 7-km coastal promenade linking the Old Port to modern resort beaches. Following the 1974 Turkish invasion, Limassol grew into the island's dominant commercial and tourist hub, today combining a cosmopolitan atmosphere with a renovated historic center.
The medieval Limassol Castle, rebuilt by the Frankish military around 1210, anchors the renovated Old Town; the surrounding streets—particularly Anexartisias Street—offer shopping and dining in restored Ottoman- and British-era buildings. Beyond the city, the archaeological site of ancient Amathus lies on the eastern outskirts, accessible via a seafront wooden promenade. Kourion, to the west, features a spectacular Greco-Roman theatre with panoramic coastal views and ranks among Cyprus's most compelling ancient sites. Kolossi Castle completes the main historical excursion circuit. Passengers seeking beach time head to Governor's Beach—notable for dark sand set against white chalk cliffs—or the long stretch of Lady's Mile Beach to the southwest. The Limassol Wine Festival in September and the famously colorful Limassol Carnival in February or March are events worth timing a call around.
