About Le Palais

Le Palais is the principal port and main town of Belle-Île-en-Mer, Brittany's largest island, situated approximately 14 km off the Quiberon peninsula in the département of Morbihan. The harbour sits beneath a massive historical citadel and is served by year-round ferry from Quiberon in roughly 45 minutes. The island's permanent population of around 5,300 swells to as many as 35,000 in peak summer season, driven by an economy centred on tourism and fishing.

The citadel immediately above the Le Palais quay is the dominant landmark, providing historical depth within steps of the landing. The island's southwestern Côte Sauvage presents some of the most dramatic cliff scenery on the Breton Atlantic coast, while Les Grands Sables is the largest of the island's accessible beaches on the gentler northeastern shore. The coastal rock formations immortalised by Monet's celebrated 1886 series remain a draw for visitors with an interest in art history. Several operators run guided coach day tours covering the island's main sights, with a scheduled return to Le Palais for late-afternoon departures; the island can alternatively be cycled end-to-end in a single day, with rentals available in both Le Palais and Sauzon. Coastal walking trails connect the harbour towns to countryside and clifftop scenery within a short distance on foot.
