About Lauterbach

Lauterbach is a subdistrict of Putbus on the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea, with a fishing and sailing harbour set near the Goor forest. Approximately 2 km from the classicist resort town of Putbus, it is historically significant as the place where Prince Malte of Putbus introduced sea bathing to Germany, and where the island's first seaside resort opened in 1816.

Passengers reaching Putbus from Lauterbach (approximately 2 km) find a town celebrated for its uniform white-painted Classicist architecture centred on the Circus — a formal circular plaza — along with the Schlosskirche Putbus (Palace Church) and the Church of Mary Magdalene. The historic Pädagogium, opened as an educational establishment in 1836, and the whimsical Haus-Kopf-über (Upside-Down House, erected 2010 on the road to Lauterbach) are popular stops. Cultural depth comes from the Puppenmuseum and Clock museum. Particularly noteworthy is the Rasender Roland, a narrow-gauge steam railway running since 1895 that links Putbus with Binz — a scenic excursion in its own right across the island.
