About Lamego, Portugal

Lamego is one of the principal cities of the Trás-os-Montes region of northeastern Portugal, situated near the Douro River valley. The surrounding landscape forms the Alto Douro Vinhateiro wine country, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, celebrated for its terraced vineyards and port wine production. Tourist cruises traverse the Douro River from Porto to the Spanish border at Barca d'Alva via locks at the Pocinho, Valeira, Régua, Carrapatelo and Crestuma-Lever dams.

The dominant draw of the area around Lamego is the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, the UNESCO-designated wine region declared a World Heritage Site in December 2001, where port wine grapes are cultivated on dramatic terraced slopes above the Douro. The broader Trás-os-Montes region also encompasses Montesinho Natural Park to the north, the Douro International Natural Park to the east along the Spanish border, and the Peneda-Gerês National Park to the northwest. Local agricultural products including corn, wheat, olive oil, chestnuts and wine grapes define the rural character of the region.
